Luthuli Private Game Reserve is 9,215 acres in extent and is situated in KwaZulu Natal Province on the eastern seaboard of South Africa, approximately 3 hours drive from the coastal port of Durban. Luthuli Private Game Reserve is within the Zululand Rhino reserve, which is an area of 53,218 acres, there are no fences separating Luthuli from the Rhino Reserve and the game roams the entire area.
Zululand is the epicenter of South Africa's world-renowned conservation initiative in saving both the Black and White Rhino from the brink of extinction. Strong viable populations of black and white rhino occur on Luthuli Private Game Reserve. Elephant and buffalo also occur in significant numbers, as well as leopard and giraffe, which makes for interesting walking, when stalking other game.
Currently the following species are on quota in Luthuli Private Game Reserve, buffalo, greater kudu, blue wildebeest, nyala, Burchell's zebra, impala, warthog, grey duiker, and red duiker. As the effects of the conservation initiative by management gain momentum it is hoped that species like leopard, white rhino, waterbuck, common reedbuck, bushbuck, steenbuck and bushpig will be added to this list.
In close proximity to Luthuli Private Game Reserve, we have other areas where we are able to source species currently not available at Luthuli such as white rhino, hippo, giraffe, bushbuck, blesbuck, waterbuck, common reedbuck, mountain reedbuck, steenbuck and bushpig.
The topography of Luthuli Private Game Reserve is steeply rolling and hilly, forming a maze of deep ridges, with thick bush in the valleys and acacia savannah and grassland on the slopes and hilltops. It is interesting, beautiful country with a summer rainfall. The region is described as KwaZulu Coastal Forest Mosaic and it extends along the eastern coast of South Africa and it is a mix of forest interspersed with thornveld and represents the southernmost distribution for tropical faunas and floras in Africa, containing highly endemic flora as well as some narrowly endemic animals. It is a frost-free area contributing to the forest's subtropical nature.
Access to Luthuli Private Game Reserve is by air from Johannesburg to Durban, and by ground transportation from Durban to the Concesssion.
Accommodation at Luthuli Private Game Reserve is a comfortable, newly appointed bush camp set under thatched roofs, and beautifully laid out, there is a swimming pool to cool off in the subtropical heat. All the camp comforts that a client could expect on Safari are available. Power is 220 volt and is supplied by the national grid. Telephones are available and cell phones work.
Luthuli Private Game Reserve is a low risk Malaria area, nevertheless it is recommended that precautions in this regard need to be taken. With regard to Maleria speak to your physician about the best options available in terms of prophylactics, these need to be taken for two weeks prior to your arrival in Northern KwaZulu Natal, for the duration of your stay, and for two weeks after your departure.
